There are just 880 mountain gorillas left in the wild.\u00a0They exist in three countries;\u00a0The Democratic\u00a0Republic\u00a0of Congo, Rwanda and Uganda.\u00a0Bwindi\u00a0Impenetrable National Park in\u00a0Uganda,\u00a0has over 400 living in the mountains, almost half the entire population.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

We arrived into our\u00a0accommodation\u00a0around 4.30pm.\u00a0 We were wowed at first site. The rooms at\u00a0Engagi\u00a0Lodge are basic but nice.\u00a0The\u00a0staff are\u00a0lovely and obliging.\u00a0However,\u00a0the main reception and restaurant area are simply stunning. It is an open-faced structure that stares straight at\u00a0virgin forest.\u00a0 Sitting for an hour or two with a book is a must-do at this lodge.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

For our gorillas in Uganda trek, we\u00a0set off\u00a0very\u00a0early,\u00a0as we\u00a0had\u00a0a two-hour drive into the\u00a0national park region\u00a0where they live.\u00a0\u00a0We drove in\u00a0dark for the first 30 minutes or so but when the sun rose, the most stunning mountain forest landscape was revealed!\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

We arrived at the starting point about 8.00am.\u00a0Our group was provided with a thorough briefing by the\u00a0lead\u00a0guide. 30 minutes later we\u2019re off, tracking one of the 4 local gorilla families\u00a0we had been allocated to.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

There\u2019s heaps of luck\u00a0involved\u00a0with spotting gorillas. The weather and the\u00a0distance\u00a0you need to where they are positioned at the time,\u00a0play a role. We happened to be\u00a0very luck on both accounts. The weather was fine and the\u00a0gorilla\u00a0family we were allocated\u00a0to,\u00a0were close by.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

We sat and watched nine of theses wonderful primates for an hour. There was a mother and baby (about 4 weeks old we were told) plus the silverback\u00a0and\u00a0other members of the family. There\u2019s a general rule that humans should\u00a0not go within 8metres of the gorillas. No one told the gorillas that however, as we found ourselves within 2metres of them. They are not easy to photograph\u00a0but then, just\u00a0watching them and living the moment, is\u00a0a\u00a0once-in-a-lifetime opportunity.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
