I arrived with Kate into cricket-mad Guyana from Panama City. The airport at Georgetown\u00a0(named after King George III)\u00a0is about an hour\u2019s drive from the city.\u00a0Our driver, Patrick, talks the entire journey so we feel like we know a lot by the time we arrive in town.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

We\u2019re\u00a0booked into Cara Lodge, a famous colonial-style building\u00a0not far from the city centre. After a long flight the lodge is indeed a very pretty sight: a beautiful timber construction built-in 1840. We\u2019re upgraded to a room where Prince Harry and Mick\u00a0Jagger\u00a0have both stayed on separate occasions.\u00a0How cool is that!\u00a0we say to ourselves while high-fiving. While this region is not necessarily known for its food, the restaurant in Cara Lodge is\u00a0very\u00a0good. Try the\u00a0pepper pot stew, a local\u00a0dish\u00a0with tamarind, bay leaf and heaps of pepper added to slow-cooked beef.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The next morning we start our city tour. It takes in the local sites of significance including some beautiful timber buildings\u00a0left over from the British and Dutch\u00a0eras before Guyana\u00a0claimed independence in 1966. After taking many photos of the buildings, I ask our guide Salvador \u2013 born and bred in Georgetown\u00a0\u2013\u00a0if UNESCO has listed any of them. I find out it\u2019s quite a sore point because Paramaribo,\u00a0the neighbouring capital of Suriname\u00a0is\u00a0\u00a0UNESCO-listed and Georgetown is\u00a0not. He changes the conversation.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The core sites of the city include the gorgeous St George\u00a0Cathedral, which we\u2019re told is the biggest\u00a0wooden building in South America; the famous\u00a0Stabroek\u00a0markets and\u00a0the parliament building constructed in the 1830s.\u00a0The highlight for Kate and I, however, is the GCC\u00a0\u2013\u00a0the Georgetown Cricket Club. We\u2019re\u00a0taken on\u00a0a tour inside and out. The bar, full of test cricket paraphernalia,\u00a0is something straight out of the 1970s. You can just imagine Clive Lloyd (a local hero and captain of the West Indies Cricket team for many years), having a drink with fellow players\u00a0at this bar.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
